Readership Profile

In order to collect this information i conducted a focus group. Within this group i gained a greater understanding of what my target audience would want from a music magazine as i confronted people who would fit the stereotype of my genre.

For the contents page i again heavily used the black and white style however, i incorporated coloured images into the design to see what effect they had. As a finished page i am disappointed with the outcome and this is mainly due the empty white space that i have left. Also, in future work, if i am going to have black and white as the majority then it appears best to just maintain the black and white as small inclusions of colour does not work well. Furthermore, i will need to consider my background choice for the contents page. Although this design is not completely ineffective, the nature of my music genre will expect a far more grown up, photograph based approach that relates to the theme of the magazine.
For this practice magazine, i used Photoshop to create my cover. I decided this would be a useful time to explore the features within Photoshop and become familiar with the tools and features that are available within the program. I began by selecting my conventional mid-shot image. Once i had done this, i used the image modification tools such as contrast and saturation. Resultantly, i ended up with a black and white image and really liked the effect this had as it gives the image an added attitude and mood. Due to the black and white appearance i decided to maintain this throughout the design, hence the use of black and white text. Overall, i was reasonably pleased with this design however, in future productions i will hope to incorporate colour into the design as this is a more visually appealing choice and is also the route in which other existing magazines follow and more importantly successful magazines follow.

This is the first blog of my music magazine coursework project.  Over the course of this blog, I will show you how I have been building up ideas for my music magazine

Although i am someone who will give all music a chance to have an impression on me, I am particularly interested in Indie and punk/ ska punk music. Some particular bands i enjoy are The King Blues, Oasis and The Gaslight Anthem. As a result of this, the most natural choice of magazine for me to study is NME as this is a magazine  based on genres of music that i prefer and is widely popular for music enthusiasts. It covers bands in the music industry that are popular and also bands that may be up and coming.
